Hi Dave!  Our resident antenna guru is W4TMR-Charlie.  If you ask him anything about an HF antenna, he'll happily tell you everything he knows, and then some.

You can usually find him on 145.470 before the net (14:00 - 14:30), sometimes after the net, and sometimes in the morning.  Just put a call out for him.

73,
John

The wire antenna is your best value, easier to install, ,and allows you to make contacts worldwide. An off center fed dipole presents less SWR than other multiband antennas like the G5RV and would not require an external tuner. More height is better although not necessarily required.. After getting on most bands, you can decide which is your favorite, and put up a better antenna just for those frequencies. "100 watts and a wire" work well.

Very good Sam, simpler antennas can produce acceptable results for a beginner. Shopping around for antenna components keeps your investment low and provides a great learning experience.

I'd put my effort into an antenna that would cover 20/40/80 to start out. 10 and 15 won't see as much activity as them and 160 takes a bit of room to do well.
